Deliciously funny tale of onion pickers -- the Tidwell brothers and the Bumpinmeyer sisters dealing with life in Depression Era Oklahoma. Penny and Clementine Bumpinmeyer dream of leavin' their hometown of Hooker behind to find a new life in the green fields of Californee. Jeb and Aloysious Tidwell must first come to grips with the loss of their mother before follwing the sisters out West. As Penny and Jeb struggle with an on-again-off-again relationship, Clementine tries to connect with Aloysious. But things in Californee don't go as well as expected and during the hard times dreaded family secrets are revealed. Penny blames Clementine for years of abuse that she suffered at the hands of their father. In a heartbreaking and cataclysmic finale, Clementine commits suicide.
